The 2010 assassination of a Hamas operative wanted by the Israeli government for the kidnapping and murder of two Israeli soldiers has inspired a French-Israeli director to create a spy comedy starring supermodel Bar Refaeli.
Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s assassination in Dubai made headlines across the world amid speculation that it was allegedly carried out by Mossad agents holding passports from several European countries and Australia.
While the film’s title Kidon (The Spear) stands for the supposed name of the Mossad assassination unit, it offers a different version of events, viewed from a comic perspective.
It seems that any spy story adapted for the silver screen has to feature a temptress. As the French say, cherchez la femme. In the Kidon case, it’s Leonardo DiCaprio’s ex girlfriend, Bar Refaeli.
The model-turned-actress plays an Israeli siren whose mission is to bait the notorious arms-smuggling Hamas leader in exile into the trap.
In fact, as Rafaeli revealed, she has long been tempted to work not as an actress, but rather as a Mossad agent.
“That’s my secret life dream. I would love to be in the Mossad and maybe I am, who knows. I think that being like a famous model is the best alternate…what would you call it – cover,” she told The Associated Press agency.
Those who don’t stomach fiction mixed with fact should be warned that all characters in the film are fictional, except for al-Mabhouh.
